Pompei Nursery – Living Beauty

As a century-old home was being readied for extensive updating – both inside and out – by Carey Bros. Remodeling, a second partner in the project — DPG Design — was focused on the exterior landscaping that would add a finishing touch of greenery and color.  

The home, located at 604 Second Street in Brentwood, California, is a modest, catalog design mail-order kit home that was among 600 or so small houses constructed in a nearby mining community in the early 1900s. It was later moved intact to its current location at the corner of Second and Chestnut Streets.

While the physical home required a great deal of planning and effort for its restoration, the project also included a full and carefully planned replacement of all landscaping and hardscape for the lot that surrounded the house.

A key elements in authentically renovating and updating a historic 111-year-old bungalow, such as this, was to carefully “complete” the overall picture by selecting the just right mix of trees, plants and shrubs that would best accent the project and add visual appeal to the exterior surroundings without overwhelming or altering the vintage feel of the setting. 

As Carey Bros. Remodeling began developing the multi-faceted and complex construction aspects, they partnered with award-winning DPG Design – headed by Dave and Susie Garcia – who went to work as well, totally planning and coordinating every step of the exterior landscaping… for everything from the lot line up to the house.

“Very early in the process, we had an onsite walk-through with Phyllis Wilson, the co-owner of Pompei Nursery,” states Susie Garcia, “to review the surrounding property and ascertain what specific trees and shrubs she might recommend that would best suit this particular project.”

Pompei Nursery then proposed a carefully blended traditional style landscape array for the 111-year old home that took both the age and history of the home into consideration.

“We recommended plants reminiscent of that era,” notes Wilson. “We provided red Heirloom roses, Lavender plants, Cape Mallow, Abutilon, Lemon Grasses, green variegated Flax and pink Cordyline.”

After a thoughtful pause, she added, “and a beautiful pink Camellia tree that sits in the center of the front yard.”

In the days that followed, one after another of the one and five-gallon plants and trees were perfectly positioned around the property… so as to artfully grow and mature into the space… and that, over time, would not appear “over” planted.

“Everything fit the property perfectly,” states Morris Carey. “Not too much… not too little…  it was just right and simply beautiful.”

Homeowners Robin and Mike McClellan chimed in as well; “the plants provided by Pompei Nursery are a wonderful addition to our landscape… and the flowering plants will brighten our yard and provide many years of enjoyment.”

To underscore this point, Phyllis Wilson knowingly adds, “Every Springtime will bring a beautiful array of soft color and fragrances that immediately call up memories of long ago.”
