SUPER BOWL SAFETY
The Super Bowl is the most watched television event in the United States, and with so many families recently purchasing new televisions, Safe Kids is promoting National TV Safety Day on January 31 to remind parents and caregivers how to protect kids from the dangers of TV tip-overs.
Every 45 minutes here in the United States – or less than the length it will take to play about half of the Super Bowl – a child is rushed to the emergency room for injuries caused by TVs that are not properly secured. Yet, most families are unaware that securing a TV is an important safety measure. As a result, Safe Kids Worldwide is raising awareness about TV tip-overs and educating parents and caregivers about the simple steps they can take to protect children and avoid potentially fatal injuries.
Safe Kids Worldwide and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® are teaming up to make homes safer by urging parents and caregivers to do a quick check of their homes to make sure all of their TVs are safely secured and placed properly. As a part of this effort, Safe Kids and CEA encourage families to recycle their old TVs, which can be hazards if not placed on a low, stable piece of furniture.
Many TV tip-overs are a result of unsteady TVs that are not secured to the wall. Large and heavier cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs placed on dressers or high furniture can tip over and cause injuries, even death, if children climb onto that furniture.
Safe Kids Worldwide and CEA recommend these tips to help keep kids safe:
- Secure Your TV. If you have an older TV, make sure you either secure it to a wall or place it on a low, stable piece of furniture that is appropriate for the TV’s size and weight.
- Recycle Your TV. To find a location near your home that safely and easily recycles unwanted TVs, go to www.GreenerGadgets.org.
- Secure your flat-panel TV. If you’re replacing your CRT TV with a new TV, be sure your flat-panel TV is properly secured with a mount that has a safety certification by an independent laboratory (such as UL, CSA, ETL).

SUPER BOWL FUN FACTS
SUPER BOWL IS AN EXCUSE TO SPLURGE
Nationwide this year, 39 million viewers are planning to host a party, while another 62 million are planning to attend one, according to the National Retail Federation’s Super Bowl Spending Survey done by Prosper Insights & Analytics. About 10 million fans said they plan to watch from a local restaurant or bar.
The biggest bucks will be spent by those people throwing parties: About 7.7 million television sets will be purchased for occasion, up from 5 million in 2012. And people will buy an estimated 3.7 million new pieces of furniture for their shindigs, including new entertainment centers, chairs and couches.

WHY STARBUCKS IS THE BEST WAY TO BOOST YOUR HOME’S VALUE
We’re always hunting for ways to increase the value of our homes — and interior revamps or full-on remodels may do the trick.
Or you could just move near a Starbucks.
Homes located near a Starbucks coffee shop appreciate (aka increase in value) at a far faster rate than homes not near a Starbucks, according to experts at real estate database Zillow. Since 1997, houses near a Starbucks appreciated 96 percent while homes farther away appreciated only 65 percent, Zillow explains in their new book Zillow Talk.
The reason? One theory is that house hunters may think a Starbucks means the neighborhood is gentrifying. Or maybe it signals that a neighborhood is getting safer… and a safer neighborhood is buyers’ main reason for moving, according to a new survey from analysts at The Demand Institute. A simpler explanation? More than half of home buyers want restaurants and cafes within “a short drive” of their new home, so perhaps Starbucks fits that description.
Whatever the reason, the Zillow authors make two things clear: A neighborhood Starbucks isn’t the result of higher home prices; it causes them. And the closer you live to one, the better. After Starbucks opened in a particular neighborhood, nearby homes not only rose in value, but they also appreciated faster the closer they were to the shop.
“Starbucks equates with venti-sized home-value appreciation,” they write in a book excerpt on Quartz. “Moreover, Starbucks seems to be fueling — not following — these higher home values.”
So the next time you’ve got an urge to reach for the hammer, just get a latte and house hunt instead. Your home’s value will thank you.
SUPER BOWL CLEAN UP
Sports fans nationwide are mourning their beer-battered carpet, salsa-stained armchairs, and nacho cheese-caked couch cushions. Last night, hosting an epic Super Bowl party seemed like a great idea. Today, the cheese bits ground into your carpet make you think otherwise.
Here are a few cleaning tips to address even the most offensive spills. They’ll even work 24-hours after the foul play! The only thing we can’t fix are the bruised egos of Patriots fans.
Did you toss the plate of nachos after Jacobs made the game-winning touchdown?
If the cheese has already hardened, scrape the solid pieces off the carpet with a dull knife (a butter knife works well). Then, mix one teaspoon of a mild detergent (containing no alkalies or bleaches) with a cup of lukewarm water. Sponge the solution into the stain. Then, blot the area dry – do not rub! Use a spray bottle to spritz the stained area with room-temperature water. Blot the area again to remove excess moisture, and allow the stain to fully dry. If the stain persists, moisten the stained area with hydrogen peroxide. You can find it at your local drugstore for less than $1 for 16 ounces. Let the peroxide stand for a full hour then blot. Repeat until the carpet is stain-free.
Did your friend Joe use your new couch to wipe off the sauce from his BBQ wings?
First, use a dull knife to scrape off any excess sauce from the upholstery. Mix a solution of two cups cool water and one-tablespoon dishwashing liquid. Sponge the solution slowly in the stain, and then blot it until the liquid is absorbed. Use a spray bottle to rinse the stain with cold water, but only get the upholstery as wet as necessary to remove the barbeque sauce stain. Repeat these steps until the stain had disappeared.
When Manningham caught the ball, did your beer fly from your cup during a high five?
First, blot as much beer up as possible with clean paper towels. Mix two cups of warm water with one tablespoon of white vinegar, and sponge the solution slowly into the stain. Use a spray bottle and rinse the area with cold water, then blot to remove excess moisture. Let the area fully dry, then repeat as necessary until the beer stain is gone.
As you did Cruz’s post touchdown Salsa dance, did salsa fall off your chip?
First, remove any chunks or jalapeños left behind on your carpet. Then, in a small bowl, combine two cups of warm water with one tablespoon of liquid dish soap. Using a clean cloth, dab a little bit of the solution at a time onto the stained area, then blot up the excess moisture with another clean cloth. Repeat these steps until all of the stain is absorbed.
