Repairing Asbestos Shingle Siding

Your house might have asbestos shingles covering its outside They can last almost forever with proper care, but this type of shingle can cause problems when it’s time to remodel or make a repair.

Sawing and sanding is strictly forbidden because it releases tiny little asbestos fibers into the air. Even removing them can release fibers.

To fix a broken one, take a full shingle from an out-of-sight place like the top of a gable, and install a vent or decorative grill in its place. Remove it by pressing the top of the shingle. Then carefully clip or cut the nail heads. Nail it in place — carefully. Check local regulations for asbestos disposal, too.
