After Winter Home Repairs: Plan Now For Spring
Plan now to do a walk around your home to look for signs of weather damage. Ignoring these repairs to your home may end up being a very costly. Pay now, pay double later! Here are just a few things to take a good look at to start your spring and summer repair list.
Roof
You may hire a residential roofing contractor to fix broken, missing shingles, cracked rubber boots around vent pipes, and rust spots on flashing.
Gutters and downspouts
Damaged hangers that cause gutters to sag and separate from the house
Leaky gutter joints
Water shooting out downspout seams
Downspouts disconnected from gutters or pointed toward foundations
Foundation
Gutter and downspout damage can soak the earth and, when it freezes, cause your foundation to crack and water to seep into your basement.
Paint
Moisture from snow and ice can cause house paint to blister and peel, exposing wood to water and rot.
Driveways
Excessive cold will cause cracks and potholes in asphalt driveways.
Composition Roofing Or Laminate Roofing?
The roofing you will most commonly see is composition roof or flat roof.
It is a flat, single-layer shingle made of cellulose or fiberglass and coated in asphalt or granules. Laminated shingles, also known as “architectural” or “three-dimensional” shingles, are double-layered fiberglass and use combinations of thickness and spacing to create a more distinct look.
The heavier the shingle the longer life and warranty is has. Composition roofing offers a broader range of colors from light to dark. The lighter color shingles can reduce cooling costs for your home. Roofing with algae-resistant granules are available in humid climates. Laminated shingles are more fire-, wind- and hail-resistant and often carry warranties up to 50 years, about twice as long as composition shingles.
Asphalt Shingles Vs Concrete Tile Roofing
Concrete tiles are a step up from asphalt shingles. Both materials offer different styles and colors and will enhance the curb appeal and weatherproofing of a home.
Where weather and wind are an issue both are resistant to impact from inclement weather, but one of the issues with the asphalt shingles, though, is that they may blow off in high winds. Concrete tiles do not blow away.
The most significant difference between these materials is the initial installation. Concrete tiles are more difficult to install and require professionals. Roofing contractors install cementicious materials have had a specific training just for these products. This will ensure the roofing installation is done correctly to have a safe, and long lasting roof.
If you are looking for a “green” roof, asphalt shingles are considered less environmentally friendly than concrete tiles because they do not serve to insulate and block heat from the home, which can lead to higher utility bills and increased energy use. It has been found that tile roofing can reduce heating and cooling costs because of the type of ventilation required upon installation.
Metal Seam Roofing
Metal seam rooftops are made out of metal panels that are divided by seams, or small ridges running down the roof. These seams help channel water and dirt. Metal roofs are often slanted at an angle so dirt cannot build up on the surface. Since the panels are applied in sections, metal roofs can be used on many different types of roofs.
Do You Need Roof Flashing?
Roof flashing lays a critical roll of preventing leaks and water seepage in your roof. Roofing contractors call it best defense against water penetration. Flashing can be made of either galvanized metal or aluminum. Most roofing contractors choose aluminum because it is easier to fabricate to the right shapes and will not rust. Flashings are typically used any place on your roof where different angles meet – such as dormers, the roof peak, edges, or where the roof is penetrated by vents, skylights, etc. to prevent leaks from developing and causing costly water damage to your home.
Typical Cost For Roof Replacement
A worn or damaged roof leaves your home vulnerable to leaks and damage, but it may take careful planning to fit a new roof into the budget. The average roof replacement cost $18,913, according to a 2014 report by “Remodeling Magazine,” though the cost of your project may vary based on the material you choose.

Interesting Listener Question:
Leonard called in to ask what he could do to correct a problem with collapsed glass in a dual pane widow that caused a fire, burning a portion of his fence. Unfortunately, we had not heard anything about this problem, but would look into it for him.
A google search turned this blog up:
When an insulated glazing unit becomes slightly concave — a phenomenon called “glass deflection” or “collapsed glass” — reflected sunlight can be concentrated –
