On Matching Keys
By onthehouse on August 31, 2015
Q. The lock on my front door needs changing. Rather than having yet another key on my chain, is there some way to alter the lock so the key I use for all my other door locks works with this one? -Billy O., E-Mail Laplace, LA.
A. Locksets which are produced by the same manufacturer can be keyed alike to avoid the “abundant key syndrome”. Check the brand of your existing locksets and make sure that the new one for your front door is made by the same manufacturer. Some stores that sell hardware will key the new lockset to match the others provided you supply them with a key. Otherwise, a local locksmith will be able to help.
