Energy-saving “cool” roofs are traditionally white. A color, homeowners usually pass right by. Today you’ll learn new colors are coming, that still keep roofs cool too.

Here’s how: Brighter and darker colors for roofing materials are getting cooler and cooler, thanks to research by Berkeley Laboratory, which will soon bring a new “Cool” shingle for residential roofs to market. It’s Environmental Energy Technologies division has studied the solar reflectance of roofs and developed new cool-color pigments and revolutionary manufacturing techniques that allow darker and more vibrant colors to still reflect nearly as much sunlight as white or gray roofing materials do.

Soon, you’ll be able to roof with designer colors and still save energy dollars too. Dramatic energy-savings browns, blues, purples, reds, and greens are just around the corner and just about ready to go “UP on the roof” to improve looks and lower utility bills
