Choosing a Wall Fastener

Ever try to hang a mirror onto wallboard only to have it end up in a million pieces on the floor? Anchoring objects into studs or other solid framing isn’t always possible. That’s when you need a fastener designed especially for wallboard. There are as many different fasteners as Carter has Little Liver Pills. Molly bolts, toggle bolts, screw-in anchors, drive-in anchors and expansion hangers are among the most popular. The real secret to a solid anchor is choosing one rated to carry the load — heavier objects require larger or multiple anchors. What’s more, drilling a properly sized pilot hole and being careful not to over-tighten the anchor will preserve the integrity of the surrounding wallboard. That’s where the anchor gets its real muscle.
