Auto Trip Planned?
Here’s a real big key to a much safer ride for every mile you plan to drive!
“The Dinah Shore Show” made its debut on television in 1951. Dinah’s theme song encouraged America to drive somewhere. If you’re one who’s taking her advice and planning a car trip for the holidays, think “safety check” before hitting the roadways. One of the more important items is tire pressure, which is greatly affected by cooler weather. Every 10 degree drop in the outside air causes tire pressure to decrease by 1 or 2 pounds. If the tire pressure is 4 pounds low or more, it affects handling and causes excessive wear.
Also check your spare. Many are smaller emergency-only, get-me-home type tires. If used, it’s important to note any information molded into the spare tire wall. This includes such things as recommended distance limitations and most important, the maximum speed which is not to be not to be exceeded (usually only 55 miles per hour). Don’t forget the roadside emergency stuff like jumper cables, flares, and a flashlight. For ice and snow, make sure you have some sand or cat litter for better traction. Have a nice trip.
