Key Operated Chuck? No Problem

If you’ve had an electric drill for a long time, you know that it can be one of the most handy trinkets in your tool box. That’s the good news. If you’ve had an electric drill for a long time, it probably has a key operated chuck — and chances are the key is missing. That’s the bad news. Sound familiar?

If it does, your troubles are over. If your drill is in good shape, and you don’t have a keyless chuck — no problem. You can buy a keyless chuck replacement kit and make the conversion at one-fifth the cost of replacing the entire drill.

Open the old chuck all the way and remove the screw inside at its base (be careful it’s, probably a left-hand thread). Next, unscrew the old chuck and reverse the operation to install the new one.
