If your deck looks like topside on the good ship Minnow, here’s how to restore it to the warm, inviting setting it was when new. All it needs is rejuvenating and some Carey Brothers’ TLC.

Start by swabbing with a solution of one cup of powdered laundry detergent in a gallon of hot water. Add a cup of chlorine bleach if mildew is present. Severely neglected decks might require a more potent commercial deck-bleaching product. If so, get one with phosphoric or oxalic acid. Use it with a power washer from a tool rental company or paint store. Then add a coat of high-quality oil-base deck stain or clear wood finish with UV inhibitors. These protect it from harmful ultraviolet rays. Fire up the coals, mix a Mai-Tai, put a shrimp on the barbeque, settle back and relax and admire your work. Your decks now are sparkling clean, warm and inviting — a beautiful scene.
