The fireplace isn’t an incinerator. Burning wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, Styrofoam or any kind of trash in a fireplace is dangerous. They give off toxic fumes and deadly carbon monoxide that often doesn’t make it up the chimney. Burning Christmas trees is even worse because green wood creates creosote build-up that can cause a serious fire deep in the flue lining.

Burn only dried hardwoods after inspecting the flue to make sure it’s clear. Also make sure the damper’s open first. Take Christmas trees and holiday boxes outside.
