A small, weathered and aging 111-year old bungalow, located at 604 Second Street in Old Town Brentwood California, presented a unique challenge for Carey Brothers Remodeling to do a total top-to-bottom and inside-out period restoration.

The house itself was a simple 1,177 sq. ft. catalog ordered kit-type structure originally built in a nearby coal and copper mining camp in 1906 – and later moved intact to its current location.

While the physical home required a great deal of planning and effort for its restoration, the project also included a full and carefully planned replacement of all landscape and hardscape for the corner lot that surrounded the house.

As Carey Bros. Remodeling began developing the multi-faceted and complex construction aspects, their award-winning partners – handling the planning for everything from the lot line to the house – went to work as well.

DPG Design, headed by Dave and Susie Garcia, signed on to totally coordinate every step of the exterior landscaping and hardscape installation. With the experience of thousands of such projects and award-winning designs to their credit, the pair initially focused on the walkways and drive that visually lead from the surrounding sidewalks and streets and tied the home to the neighborhood.

“From past experience, and for its quality and design, Belgard Pavers was the logical choice,” states Susie Garcia. “ We chose their Mega-Lafitt® Textured Stone as it offered natural-looking modular pavers that combined the look and feel of an aged, rough-cut flagstone with superior strength and long-term durability… along with a thick 80mm height… and the modular shapes allowed for both creativity and flexibility in our design and installation.”

Contractor James Carey says Belgard pavers were the perfect solution for the paths, patio, and driveway at 604 Second Street and notes that the driveway and turn-around pad alone used nearly 1,000 sq. ft. of Mega-Lafitt textured stone pavers. “They are extremely durable and very attractive with a rich natural color and aged texture that gives them the desired ‘Old World’ feel that adheres to both the antiquity and charm of the home.”

Carey Bros. designer, Carol Carey adds, “An additional benefit is that the joints between the pavers are filled with crushed rock, which provides a permeable surface for efficient and environmentally-friendly water shedding.”

The second-generation homeowners, Robin and Mike McClellan, were extremely pleased with the choice of Belgard Mega-Lafitt pavers as well. “The rustic look of natural stone is absolutely beautiful. While totally new, one could easily believe it has been there as long as our home’s original century-old heritage.”

“Our Mega-Lafitt pavers offer an aesthetically pleasing, natural-looking paver option for homeowners,”states Belgard Sales Manager, Joe Cullen. “They are an ideal choice for patios, walkways, driveways and pool decks… especially where an aged appearance is desired. These rugged pavers offer the appearance of cut flagstone along with the strength and long-term durability that Belgard customers have come to expect.”
